Once you have your Grooper Repository initialized and connected, you need to activate your Grooper license.  When you purchased Grooper, you should have received a license key GUID, something like "1a2b3c4d-5e6f-7g8h-9i10-j11k12l13m14". You will need this GUID to license your Grooper installation.

There are three ways to license Grooper:
For client-server environments, a Grooper Licensing service is installed and started on the host server using Grooper Config.  Then, a License Server object is created in Grooper Design Studio and configured with the host server's name and port number.  Next, the license is activated using the "Activate Online" button and entering Grooper serial number, or, if necessary, imported from a .lic file using the "Import License Package" button.
* cloud hosted
* stand-alone
* self hosted

Client machines can then be set up to access licensing information by creating their own License Server object, referencing the host server's name and port number (Note: You will also need to add the server's machine id to the Machines folder to accomplish this).

Cloud hosted licensing is the easiest but least secure method of licensing.
* It is easiest because a Grooper Repository is licensed simply by entering the license GUID into a property at the root node in Grooper Design.  Licensing is decremented over the internet.
* However, all that's required to license the repository is the GUID.  It is not locked to any individual server or machine on use.
** This means any user with the license GUID and an internet connection can use the license.  Make sure to keep your GUID secure and do not share with anyone that you do not wish to have access.
* Also, be aware licensing is authorized by a licensing server internal to BIS.  If that server goes down, you may temporarily loose licensing.
** This is an exceptionally rare occurrence and our disaster recovery plan will switch to an alternate licensing server.  However, that switchover could take between one and two hours, in which time Grooper would not be licensed.

Installing a Grooper Licensing service
The "stand-alone" and "self hosted" methods require additional setup using Grooper Config but are more secure.
<tabs style="margin:20px">
* These installations are more secure because the license is locked to an individual machine when the license key is activated.
<tab name="Prereqs" style="margin:20px">
** If a user attempts to use the license GUID to license another Grooper installation, licensing will fail.
Before you begin
** For "self hosted" installations, licensing is distributed to client workstations via a URL provided by the Grooper Licensing service not the license GUID.

Cloud Hosted Licensing
The Grooper Licensing service will allow one licensed machine to hand out licensing information to other workstations.

To license your Grooper repository using "cloud hosted" licensing, perform the following steps:

#Open the Grooper Web Client in a web browser. At the top you will see that the software is currently "UNLICENSED".
To do this, the machine installing the service must have an installed version of Grooper that has been activated with a product key or licensing package.
#Click the "Design" icon.

IMPORTANT: Again, when licensing Grooper this way, the GUID is not connected to any one machine. Your GUID can be used by any user with access to a web browser. Make sure to keep your GUID secure and do not share with anyone that you do not wish to have access.

This portion of the article will instruct you how to perform "stand-alone" licensing.  It instructs you how to activate a Grooper license on an individual machine, using Grooper Config.

If you only complete the steps below, you will have created a "stand-alone" licensed installation.
* Grooper will only be licensed to the machine ID activating the license.

Be aware these steps are also prerequisite to creating a "self hosted" licensed installation.  You must have an activated license in order for the Grooper Licensing service to hand out licensing information to client workstations!
* The steps below describe how to activate a license on the host server.
* Importantly, the machine running the Grooper Licensing service (i.e. the host machine/server) must be the one that initially registers and activates the license.

Frist, you will need to obtain a Grooper license in order to register and activate your installation.  You may receive your license in one of two ways.

# As a license key.

#* This is by far the most common method.  You will receive a serial number key you can use to activate the product online (something like "a1bc2de3-12a3-a123-a1b2345c6de7")
# As a license package.
#* This is much less common.  A license package is a ".lic" file you can use to activate the product.  This is typically used for "locked down" environments where activating online is not an option.

If you are planning on installing a Grooper Licensing service to hand out licenses to other workstations, the machine activating the license must be the one to install the service.

If you try to install the Grooper Licensing service on a product that has not activated a license as described in the next steps, it will fail to distribute licensing to other machines.

A machine already running a licensed version of Grooper may create a Grooper Licensing service to hand out licenses to workstations.  If you connected to a Grooper Repository from an existing database connection rather than creating a local one, this may be how you need to access your licensing.  You may also need to add the server running the service to the Machines folder.

You will need to add a License Server to point to the Grooper Licensing service.  However, Grooper Design Studio first needs connection information to the machine running the service.  You add this connection information manually by adding a networked machine ID to the Machines folder.  Once the machine running the service is added to the list of machines in Grooper Design studio, the workstation can access the Grooper Licensing service.

No big deal.  That's what "self hosted" licensing is for!  With one machine already running a licensed version of Grooper, you can install the Grooper Licensing service to hand out licenses to multiple other workstations.

Self-hosted licensing is accomplished in three steps:

# Activate the Grooper license on the machine that will be the host server for licensing.

#* See the #Stand-Alone Licensing instructions above for instructions.

Installing a Grooper Licensing Service
Using the "Server Name" property, select the server running the Grooper Licensing service and press "Save".

Once a license has been activated on a machine, you can distribute licensing to client workstations by installing a Grooper Licensing service.  This makes the single licensed machine a host, serving licenses to multiple machines. Installing the Grooper Licensing service is the first step in creating a "self hosted" licensing setup.
* Grooper Services are various executable applications that run as a Windows Service to aid Grooper.
* The Grooper Licensing service will allow one licensed machine to hand out licensing information to other workstations.
* To do this, the machine installing the service must have an installed version of Grooper that has been activated with a product key or licensing package.
** Refer to the #Stand-Alone Licensing tutorial for more information on how to activate your license.

Grooper Licensing is a Grooper Service that distributes licenses to multiple workstations running Grooper applications.

Client machines can then be set up to access licensing information by creating their own License Server object, referencing the host server's name and port number (Note: You will also need to add the server's machine id to the Machines folder to accomplish this).

The Grooper Licensing service will allow one licensed machine to hand out licensing information to other workstations.

To do this, the machine installing the service must have an installed version of Grooper that has been activated with a product key or licensing package.

Open Grooper Config

1. Open the Grooper Config application. You will need to run the program as an administrator by right-clicking the icon and selecting "Run as Administrator" to install or edit the Grooper Licensing service (or any other service for that matter).

2. Navigate from the "Repository Connections" tab to the "Services" tab.

Install the Service

1. Press the "Install.." button in the toolbar to create a new Grooper service.

2. Select "Grooper Licensing" from the list of services and press the "OK" button.

Configure the Service

Enter the necessary information. The "Host Name" property will be the name of the Machine installing the service. You must also enter the username and password credentials for the account running the service.

The account specified must:

 • Have the Logon as Service permission on the machine running the service.
 • Have access to the Grooper database (if Windows security is being used for SQL connections).
 • Have access to the Grooper file store location.

In other words, the account should be able to fully access the Grooper Repository, since the repository consists of a the database and the file store.

Start the Service

1. Select the newly created service and press the "Start" button.

You will see the icon's color next to the service change from red to green, indicating the service is running.

Licensing Grooper from an active Grooper Licensing service

Before you begin

1. Open the Grooper Design Studio application.

2. Expand the "Infrastructure" folder from the Node Tree in the left hand panel and select the "Machines" folder.

3. Using the property panel to the right of the Node Tree, select the "Add Machine..." button from the toolbar.

4. Type the server's machine ID who is running the Grooper Licensing service and press the "OK" button.

The added machine ID will appear in the list of Machines when selecting the "Machines" folder as well as a Machines object as a child of the Machines Folder in the Node Tree.

Add a License Server

1. Expand the "Infrastructure" folder from the Node Tree in the left hand panel and select the "License Servers" folder.

2. Right click on the "License Servers" folder. Select "Add" and "License Server..."

3. Type a name for the License Server and press the "OK" button.

Configure the License Server

Using the "Server Name" property, select the server running the Grooper Licensing service and press "Save".

Set the License Server on the Grooper Root

1. Select the Grooper Root at the top of the Node Tree in the left hand panel. You will see the a property panel in the panel to the right.

2. Using the property panel on the right, select the created License Server from the drop down list on the "License Server" property.

Verify your licensing

Navigate from the "Grooper Root" tab to the "Licensing" tab. If successful, you will see your licensing information populated below.

Registering a license to an individual machine

While not strictly applicable to setting up the Grooper Licensing service, you do need an active license in order for the service to hand out licensing information to client workstations! Importantly, the machine running the Grooper Licensing service must be the one that initially registers and activates the license.

Before you begin

You will need to obtain a Grooper license key or license package.

! If you are planning on installing a Grooper Licensing service to hand out licenses to other workstations, the machine activating the license must be the one to install the service.

Open Grooper Design Studio

1. Open the Grooper Design Studio application.

2. Select the Grooper Root at the top of the Node Tree in the left hand panel. You will see the a property panel in the panel to the right.

Enter your licensing information

1. Navigate from the "Grooper Root" tab to the "Licensing" tab in the right hand panel.

2. Press the "Activate Online..." button to enter in a license key.

3. Enter your license key serial number and press the "OK" button.

Alternatively, you may activate Grooper by importing a .lic licensing package file by selecting "Import License Package..."

Verify your licensing

If successful, your licensing information will populate below. If you do not see any licensing information, click the "Refresh" button at the end of the toolbar.
